The hype around the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 is gaining momentum, as both India and Australia gear up to clash against each other next month.

Former Australia captain Ian Chappell has already started the mental game stating that India needs to stop Steven Smith and Nathan Lyon if they want to comfortably win Tests.

Chappell stated that Indian batters like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Cheteshwar Pujara will need to gain mental superiority over Australia's Nathan Lyon. He also said that Rishabh Pant's batting will be missed by India.

As per India Today, the 79-year-old further pointed out that India needed to figure out Steven Smith and stop him from scoring runs.

Here's what Chappell said

“One of the main tasks for Indian players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara will be to establish mental superiority over Lyon. If Australia can't rely on Lyon claiming regular wickets at an acceptable rate, their bowling will then depend greatly on the ‘big three’,

The main task for India's bowlers will be to find a way to keep the heavy-scoring Smith quiet. If India are able to limit Smith and Lyon's success they will be on the way to winning matches,"

Chappell also warned Australia that they need to stop being overly reliant on Lyon in India and need other bowlers to chip in, and that the hosts head into the series as favourites. The first Test begins on February 9 at Nagpur.
