To the delight of cricket fans across the globe, India's first-ever Women's T20 league, the Women's Premier League will commence on Saturday, with Mumbai Indians taking on Gujarat Giants in the tournament opener in Mumbai.

While Harmanpreet Kaur will lead Mumbai Indians, veteran Australian opener Beth Mooney will captain Gujarat Giants.

Ahead of the fascinating clash, former Indian batter Veda Krishnamurthy has admitted to being surprised at the Giants naming Mooney their captain for the WPL 2023.

Speaking to Aakash Chopra on his show Aakash Vani, the 30-year-old reckoned that the appointment of Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney as skippers of UP Warriorz and Gujarat Giants was unexpected, as the build-up was around Deepti Sharma and Ashleigh Gardner, respectively.

Here's what she stated

"Meg Lanning is not surprising. We had obviously expected that the team might be built around her. But I am surprised with both Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney. We felt Deepti Sharma might be the captain for the UP Warriorz,

"When the auction ended, we knew for a fact that the Gujarat Giants were more focused on overseas and didn't go for an Indian captain. So it was expected that they will have an overseas captain but it was slightly surprising that it is Beth Mooney because the build-up was around Ash Gardner."

Krishnamurthy went unsold in the WPL 2023 auction. The tournament will take place from March 4 to 26 in Mumbai.
