Our batting let us down hugely: Grace Scrivens after losing in final to India U19s

India Women's Under-19 led by Shafali Verma won the inaugural edition of the Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup. This is India's sixth U19 trophy and the first bagged by any Indian Women's side.

Young Shafali, who is part of India's 15-member squad for the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup, could not control her tears after her side beat the English girl. However, the Indian skipper wasn't the only one who shattered tears during the post-match presentation.

England's captain Grace Scrivens, in a heavy voice, talked about her team's batting not coming off in the final of the pinnacle tournament.

"Our batting let us down hugely. We've been so good throughout the tournament, going hard at bowlers, and we didn't do that today.

Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum's invented Bazball approach brushed off on the Scrivens-led side as well. The English girls batted aggressively throughout the World Cup; however, the batters didn't perform in the semifinal and final against Australia and India, respectively.

"That mindset [of] being fearless and trying to take the game on, we tried that today but it didn't quite come off."

Meanwhile, the 19-year-old won the Player of the Award for her performances in the World Cup. She was the second-highest leading run-getter with 293 runs - just behind India's Shweta Sehrawat (297) - and snapped 9 wickets as well.

"I was quite pleased [with my performances]. I was hitting it quite well and keeping the stumps in play – not sure they were all pretty wickets but I'll take them.

"I've never really played abroad so it's an amazing experience. The pitches are a bit different, you have to adapt quickly, and the heat is something you have to deal with."

After the tournament, it would be pleasing to see how quick these cricketers get fast-tracked to the national sides, as many of them have shown sheer prowess to become world leaders.

India Under-19 Women's Head Coach, Nooshin Al Khadeer also believes in the theory as he said: "This is the first time we've won the cup. [Doing it] with the Under-19s, it shows the depth we have and what is there for us in the future."
