Dinesh Karthik Claims Unwanted IPL Record After Another Listless Outing for RCB

Dinesh Karthik failed to open his account against Delhi Capitals in match number 20 of the ongoing IPL 2023 season. The cricketer arrived at the crease following Glenn Maxwell’s dismissal, and in a bid to up the scoring rate, he was holed out in the deep by Lalit Yadav.

Karthik’s first-ball duck broke RCB’s momentum as they garnered just 174-6 from their 20 overs. Notably, they look set for a 200-plus total at one stage, courtesy of Virat Kohli’s blitzkrieg at the top and Maxwell’s sparkling cameo in the middle overs.

Dinesh Karthik joins Mandeep Singh in unwanted IPL list

Dinesh Karthik’s duck against the Capitals marked his second of the season, after he failed to open his account against Mumbai Indians in RCB’s opening game of IPL 2023. The Indian cricketer has now registered 15 IPL ducks to his name, thus levelling with journeyman Mandeep Singh in an unwanted record.

Karthik made his IPL debut back at the tournament’s inception in 2008. So far, he has played 234 matches for a multitude of franchises across all seasons. Having returned to RCB’s setup last year after a brief stint in 2015, the wicketkeeper-batter was retained by the franchise for 2023 owing to his scintillating run with the bat.

The 37-year-old seems to be struggling to replicate his last year’s success this time around, considering he has only managed 10 runs for his side in their first four games at an average of 3.67.

Apart from Karthik and Mandeep Singh, Mumbai Indians legend Rohit Sharma has registered a duck 14 times. The legendary opener is joined by West Indies-based KKR all-rounder Sunil Narine, who also has 14 scoreless knocks with the bat in IPL.
