BCCI Left Unimpressed by Delhi Capitals' Jersey Gesture for Rishabh Pant

An unfortunate car accident on New Year's Eve forced Rishabh Pant to miss India's home season and the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 due to multiple injuries. With no timeline set for Pant's return to cricket, the Delhi Capitals named Australia's David Warner as skipper for IPL 2023.

Ahead of their opening match against the Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday, coach Ricky Ponting spoke about paying tribute to Pant by hanging the wicket-keeper batter's jersey in the dugout.

While DC did honour Ponting's words during the Lucknow encounter, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was left unimpressed by the franchise's grand gesture. As per The Times Now, BCCI felt that DC went overboard and treated the incident as something tragic.

The Capitals went on to lose that match against LSG by 50 runs.

Here's what an IPL source said

“It seemed a bit over the top. Such a gesture is reserved in case of ultimate tragedy or retirement. In this case, it was neither. Rishabh (Pant) is well and truly on his way to recovery faster than one expected. So while it was done with a noble intention, it is learnt that BCCI has politely told the franchise to avoid such gesture in future,”  the report stated.

During their second match last evening, Pant was seen in attendance throughout the match, which sadly ended in his side's loss against Gujarat Titans by six wickets.
