Bangladesh's Rubel Hossain announces Test retirement

Bangladesh paceman Rubel Hossain announced his retirement from Test cricket via a post on the social media site - Facebook. The 32-year-old played 27 Tests for his nation, claiming 36 wickets, which includes a solitary five-wicket haul against New Zealand.

Hossain made his Test debut against West Indies in 2009 and last donned the whites back in 2020 against Pakistan. 

Hossain revealed that the reason behind calling it quits from red-ball cricket was that younger bowlers should be picked and given a chance to develop into long-format bowlers.

"Assalamualaikom. I wanted to inform an issue. I have officially submitted a letter to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and decided to retire from test cricket,"

"The longer version of cricket plays a big role in strengthening the national team's pipeline. I think our pipeline will strengthen more if the young pacers get more opportunities. In order to provide the youngsters more opportunities in the red-ball format, I have decided to retire from Test cricket."

Hossain will continue to play in the Dhaka Premier League, and Bangladesh Premier League, apart from other domestic white-ball competitions, in a bid to make a comeback to the national side. 

The lanky fast-bowler retires with an economy rate of 3.92, which is the third-highest in Test cricket behind countryman Shahadat Hossain (4.16) and India's RP Singh (3.98).
