Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s first outing as India’s captain came during the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup in 2007. After the India vs Scotland match was washed out by rain, Dhoni led India for the first time in a high-pressure match against arch-rivals Pakistan on 14 September 2007 at Kingsmead, Durban.

On September 14, 2025, MS Dhoni celebrates his 18th anniversary as the Indian captain. Back in 2007 on the same date, he donned the leadership hat for the first time, and the historic result of that game indicated how Dhoni was destined for greatness.

MS Dhoni Humiliated Pakistan In His First Match As Indian Captain

India entered the inaugural 2007 T20I World Cup under MS Dhoni’s captaincy as seniors were rested. After their first game against Scotland was washed out, Dhoni walked in as the Indian captain for the first time against Pakistan.

The men in blue batted first and managed to score 141/9 in their 20 overs. Key contributions came from Robin Uthappa, who scored a solid 50, and a useful knock from MS Dhoni himself.

But overall, the batting unit was under pressure, especially against the Pakistani bowlers, who bowled well. Pakistan responded strongly, also making 141 and bringing the match to a tie.

But there was no Super Over back then; the rules said a tie would be decided by a bowl-out, where bowlers from each side try to hit the stumps.

The bowl-out was the first instance where the world witnessed MS Dhoni’s tactical brilliance. Instead of going with speciality bowlers, he went with players like Virender Sehwag and Robin Uthappa who could attack the stumps, which worked like a charm as India prevailed in the bowl-out 3-0.

Dhoni Went On To Become India's Greatest Captain

This match set the tone for Dhoni's captaincy, even though it was not a traditional large-score victory. It showed that he could handle pressure, make bold decisions (such as trusting unorthodox players in the bowl-out), and keep the team united under tension.

From his very first match, MS Dhoni and his career as captain would be characterised by calmness, thinking ahead, and the talent to win close games. He led India to the 2007 T20 World Cup title, and then to the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy titles, making him one of the finest captains India has ever seen.
