BBL 2022: Sydney Thunder push David Warner for leadership role

According to the latest reports, Sydney Thunder is said to be considering David Warner for the captaincy role in the forthcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season. 

Warner will be available for at least five BBL games after completing his international red-ball commitments against South Africa. 

The move also comes on the fact of the top-order batter being slapped a leadership ban from Cricket Australia (CA) in 2018 due to his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal. 

In this regard, the franchise will hold talks with CA in the coming weeks to overturn the ban and allow Warner to be their skipper for the second half of BBL. 

A few days ago, CA praised Warner for his commitment to Australian Cricket and BBL, despite receiving lucrative offers from other T20 leagues. 

Here is what Cricket Australia said: 

“The ban on David being appointed to a leadership position in Australian cricket remains in place,” CA said.

“David has shown strong leadership both on and off the field in recent seasons and his decision to play in the BBL for the next two years reflects his ongoing commitment to cricket in Australia.

Thunder are looking to fill vacuum created by Usman Khawaja, who will now play for the Brisbane Heat from the 2022-23 season.

The likes of Chris Green and Jason Sangha are turning out to the players, who are likely to don the leadership role in the first half.
