Pressure has been mounting on an underperforming Virat Kohli, who, even after relinquishing captaincy, has not been able to return to good form. The Asia Cup 2022, which gets underway on August 27, will be a great opportunity for the former India captain to find his rhythm and return to form.

Former India captain and current president of the BCCI, Sourav Ganguly recently told ANI that Kohli not only needs to score runs for the team but for himself as well.

“Virat is a big player, playing for a long time. He has a different style of scoring runs. It does not happen that a big player does not score runs for such a long time. It is essential to score runs for India as well as for himself,”

In 2022 so far, Kohli has played 16 matches for India, from which he has only 476 runs at an average of 25.05. This includes the best score of 79. His last international century came in November 2019.

Kohli, who once hit centuries for fun, has not been at his best for nearly three years now, and will look to do something special in the upcoming clash against Pakistan. India begin their Asia Cup 2022 campaign against Pakistan on August 28 in Dubai.

Talking about the high octane clash, Ganguly said,

“India and Pakistan matches are different. There is added pressure in these matches. Rohit, KL and Virat know how to handle pressure. Nobody is less or more. Anything is possible in T20.”

India, the defending champions, are also the most successful team in the Asia Cup with seven wins. The Men in Blue, who will be led by their full-time skipper Rohit Sharma, will now look to win their eighth title.
