Every cricketer dreams of making their debut count but sometimes the game has other ideas. In what was meant to be a proud day for Ireland’s Liam McCarthy, things went completely pear-shaped as he ended up with 0/81 in 4 overs against a red-hot West Indies lineup at Bready.

Liam McCarthy’s Debut Turns Sour With 0/81 At Bready

And just like that, the young Irishman found himself on a list no one wants to be a part of the most expensive bowling figures on T20I debut.

When a team piles up 256/5 in 20 overs, someone’s bound to take the brunt of the beating and sadly for Liam McCarthy, he was in the firing line. The Windies came out like a house on fire with Evin Lewis smashing 91 off 44 and skipper Shai Hope hammering 51 off just 27 balls.

By the time the carnage was done, McCarthy’s figures read: 4-0-81-0, at a shocking economy of 20.25. To put it simply, it was a nightmare debut. The ball kept disappearing into the stands, and no matter what length he tried, the Caribbean batters had an answer and it usually ended with the crowd catching the ball.

With this performance, Liam McCarthy now holds the record for the most expensive bowling figures on T20I debut.

McCarthy not only topped the unwanted charts but did so in spectacular fashion. Even the legendary James Anderson, who had a forgettable T20I debut back in 2007, didn't leak this many runs.

To be fair to the Irish pacer, the pitch was a road and the West Indies batting unit showed no mercy. Every loose ball was dispatched and even the decent ones got punished. It was one of those days where everything you try turns into cannon fodder.

Plus, nerves might have played their part. A debut in front of a home crowd, up against one of the most explosive batting line-ups in the world? It was always going to be trial by fire.

IRE vs WI 3rd T20I Live Score

Ireland are currently 22/1 after 3 overs, chasing a colossal target of 257 to beat the West Indies in the third T20I at Bready. They have gotten off to a shaky start, losing veteran captain Paul Stirling early for 13 but there are still 102 balls left and 235 runs needed.

Their current run rate is a modest 7.33 but they will need to sharply ramp that up to the required 13.82 per over if they want to pull off this epic chase. Ireland will need a couple of big partnerships and aggressive intent to keep pace in this chase.
