Women’s Ashes 2023 | Ash Gardner’s Eight-fer Floors England As Australia Conquer Trent Bridge

Ashleigh Gardner struck five times on Day 5 to polish off the English tail at Nottingham's Trent Bridge. The hosts eventually folded up for 178, giving Australia an emphatic 89-run win in the 2023 Women's Ashes Test.

Gardner’s career-best sinks England Women

England resumed their run-chase on Day 5 at 116-5, still 152 runs away from their target. Overnight batters Danni Wyatt (20*) and Kate Cross (5*) began the day cautiously as they aimed to take their side past lunch without any casualties.

However, Cross' wicket in the fifth over of the day left them stumped. After scoring a watchful 13, she became Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner's fourth victim of the innings and first of the fifth morning.

While Wyatt silently approached her maiden Test fifty on debut, Gardner was wreaking havoc at the other end with her right-arm off-breaks. Wyatt eventually succumbed to the all-rounder's dexterity, with her wicket signalling Australia's first win in a Women's Ashes Test since the 2015 edition.

Meanwhile, Gardner accounted for each of the five fallen English wickets on the day to complete the innings with career-best figures of 8-66. She also finished the contest with 12 scalps, thus quadrupling her Test career tally, which stood at four wickets from three matches prior to the Trent Bridge affair.

With Alyssa Healy-led side taking the lead in the Tests, they will now face the Englishwomen in the limited-overs section of the 2023 Women's Ashes. The immediate T20I fixture between the two sides on July 1 will be played at Birmingham's Edgbaston Stadium. The match will be the first of three T20Is, which will be followed by three ODIs until July 18.
