Australia captain Steve Smith displayed his sharp reflexes and safe hands as he pulled off a stunning catch to dismiss Avishka Fernando during the first ODI between Australia and Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium on February 12.
After winning the toss, Sri Lanka chose to bat first, hoping to put up a solid total. However, things did not go as planned for the hosts. The Australia bowlers made an early impact, putting Sri Lanka under pressure right from the start.
The first breakthrough came in the opening over when Spencer Johnson dismissed Pathum Nissanka, giving Australia the perfect start. Just when Sri Lanka was looking to settle, another blow followed in the second over.
Steve Smith Takes A Brilliant Catch
It was Aaron Hardie who delivered a length ball outside off at 129 kmph. Avishka Fernando, attempting to defend, ended up poking at the delivery away from his body. The ball took the outside edge of his bat and flew towards the slip cordon.
Standing at second slip, Steve Smith reacted quickly, moving to his left and grabbing the ball with precision. The Australian captain made it look easy, but it was a sharp, well-judged catch that left Sri Lanka struggling at 6-2.
Sri Lanka Struggle Against Australia
Losing two wickets within the first two overs was a nightmare start for Sri Lanka. At the time of writing, they are at 112-5 in 23 overs, with captain Charith Asalanka and Dunith Wellalage at the crease, trying to rebuild the innings. With Australia maintaining the upper hand, Sri Lanka will need a solid partnership to post a competitive total.
