Smriti Mandhana starred in Southern Brave’s last-ball win against Welsh Fire in match number 17 of Women’s The Hundred 2023 competition. The stylish opening batter registered one of the top-scores for her side in the run-chase, even after losing her partner Danni Wyatt early in the innings.

Mandhana knocks Fire with 41 punches in Brave win

Welsh Fire put up 144-5 on the board after they won the toss and opted to bat first. Southern Brave, chasing 145 to register their third successive win and fourth overall of the season, lost opener Danni Wyatt in the fifth ball of the innings.

Brave’s Indian import Smriti Mandhana, however, brought her side back into the game with a counterattacking 77-run stand with number three Maia Bouchier.

The Indian southpaw faced 30 deliveries in the innings, and dispatched six of them for boundaries and one of them for an elegant crowd-pleasing six on her way to score 41. Her dismissal triggered a major batting collapse as Brave almost squandered away an easy run-chase, built on the foundation of Bouchier and Mandhana herself.

The two cricketers, along with Georgia Adams at number four, all registered 40s each while none of the other batters in the line-up went past seven. Brave eventually had to work their way into getting 145, reaching there with two wickets to spare off the final ball.

Mandhana will now turn up for Southern Brave in their subsequent outing, where they will face cellar-dwellers Birmingham Phoenix in Southampton. The match will be played on August 16.
