The 32nd match of the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 between Melbourne Stars (MLS) and Melbourne Renegades (MLR) took a dramatic turn during a controversial moment in the first innings. Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, the Renegades' decision proved effective, as the Stars endured a torrid start. Among several moments from the match, one incident during the seventh over grabbed the spotlight.

The Bump Ball Incident

In the third ball of the sixth over, Melbourne Stars' skipper Marcus Stoinis faced Adam Zampa. The Australian spinner delivered a full ball around off stump . Stoinis, aiming to steady the innings, got forward and drove the ball towards extra cover. Will Sutherland, fielding in that position, leaped spectacularly to his left and seemingly plucked the ball out of the air in a sensational one-handed grab.

The Renegades’ camp erupted in joy, with Will Sutherland celebrating the dismissal of the opposition captain. However, the ball had bounced before reaching Sutherland, confirming it was a 'bump ball.'

But two ball later Sutherland got another opportunity and this time he made no mistake and grabbed the catch. His reaction after the catch caught the limelight as he knew this time he made no mistake.

Melbourne Stars Struggles In The First Innings

The Melbourne Stars' batting woes persisted throughout the innings. Opener Sam Harper fell for a duck, while Ben Duckett and Beau Webster failed to make significant contributions. By the halfway mark, the Stars found themselves in deep trouble, losing wickets at regular intervals.

At the time of writing MLS are at 117-7, with Glenn Maxwell and Usama Mir at the crease.  The Renegades bowlers, led by an impressive Adam Zampa, have kept a firm grip on the match.
