Cricket never ceases to surprise and the Knockout clash of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2024 between Sydney Thunder Women and Hobart Hurricanes Women brought a moment straight out of a cricketing blooper reel. Hobart opener Ruth Johnston found herself at the receiving end of one of the unluckiest dismissals in recent memory at Drummoyne Oval, Sydney on Wednesday.
Ruth Johnston’s Freak Dismissal Stuns Fans in WBBL Clash
Winning the toss, Hobart Hurricanes Women opted to bat first in this high-stakes game. Everything seemed normal until the fourth ball of the third over. Shabnim Ismail bowled a sharp short delivery that rushed onto Ruth Johnston and caught her off guard. Ruth attempted a pull shot, but the ball took a top edge and shot straight up in the air.
Here’s where things turned bizarre. Ruth, unaware of where the ball had gone, started running. Meanwhile, Ismail sprinted toward the stumps to attempt a catch. Looking at the bowler charging, Ruth stopped swiftly and turned but it was too late.
The ball came down, bounced in front of Ruth Johnston, and hit into the stumps, dislodging the bails. And just like that, she was out for 5 in the most bizarre fashion imaginable. It was a dismissal that left players and fans scratching their heads.
Hobart Gets Off To a Dismal Start
Ruth’s freak dismissal seemed to rattle the Hurricanes. Nicola Carey was dismissed for just 1, and the ever-reliable Lizelle Lee managed only a quick 23. Heather Graham followed soon after as she was dismissed for 10 which left Hobart struggling at 47/4 after 10 overs.
Meanwhile, at the end of 15 overs, captain Elyse Villani (23*) and Suzie Bates (15*) are at the crease as the two are looking to rescue the innings. With the score at 77/4, the duo is looking to accelerate and post a respectable total in this must-win game.
It is worth mentioning that the winner of this clash will face Brisbane Heat Women in the Challenger for a shot at the final. For the loser, it’s curtains for the season.
