Virat Kohli might have left the India captaincy, but he still has the captaincy instincts within him and it was on full display during the 3rd Test against Australia. For India to capitalise on the early wickets scalped in the second innings, they needed to dismiss Steve Smith early, which they did.

Steve Smith has a tendency to shuffle across the stumps while playing the flick shot and Mohammed Siraj got the better off him as the Indian seamer dismissed him cheaply in the second innings. However, the mastermind of the wicket dismissal was not Siraj, but Kohli instead.

Prior to the wicket, Rohit Sharma advised Siraj not to bowl from over the stumps to Smith as it would be easier for the batter to open his stance and score runs. However, Kohli interrupted immediately as he told Siraj to continue from over the wicket and bowl the scrambled seam delivery, as there would be a higher chance to dismiss him.

The tactics worked in the next delivery as Siraj bowled on the middle and leg and the Aussie batter flicked one to Rishabh Pant.

India need 275 to win

India need 275 runs in 54 overs to win the third Test. After dismissing India for 260, Australia had a 285-run lead, however, in the process of accelerating, they lost early wickets as Jasprit Bumrah once again became the chief destroyer.

He, alongside Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep scalped wickets at regular intervals as Australia lost 7 wickets 89/7, however, that was enough for Pat Cummins to declare as the India side will basically need to play an ODI match to seal the win and take the lead.
