Having last scored a Big Bash League half-century in January 2023, it has taken Sydney Sixers wicket-keeper batter Josh Philippe 20 innings across almost a couple of years to score his 17th 50-plus score in the tournament. Among the batters who scored more runs than Philippe in this period, his average of 19.73 was the lowest. In fact, no other batter with more than 300 runs since then averaged less than 20.

As a result, both Philippe and his team would be relieved to see him return to form with a match-winning 66* (41) at a strike rate of 160.97. Philippe, who opened the batting with James Vince (10), hit seven fours and two sixes to play a pivotal role in chasing down a mediocre 139-run target against Brisbane Heat at the Gabba today.

Philippe, who hit pacer Xavier Bartlett (1/21) for a boundary to bring up Sixers’ fourth successive victory in a row, emulated Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan in successfully executing a helicopter shot. Although brought into the limelight by former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Rashid’s helicopter shot is another version consisting of more wrist work than power.

It all happened on the first delivery of the 13th over when Philippe stepped out to Heat spinner Mitchell Swepson (0/31) to hit him over long-on for a six. Perhaps surprised by his own magnificent effort, as visible from his expressions, the right-handed batter received instant validation from the commentators.

Philippe, who didn’t look threatening in the powerplay on the back of not hitting a single boundary, showed first signs of attack by hitting a four and a six off Swepson in the seventh over. Until his first boundary, all he had scored were 12* (13).
