The Qualifier 1 between Chennai and Gujarat could have been a cheap outing for Ruturaj Gaikwad, but overstepping from the Titans' Darshan Nalkande gave the Super Kings batter another day to survive in the powerplay at Chepauk on Tuesday.

Nalkande, who is playing his first game of the season, created a chance in the very first over that he bowled, making the CSK opener chip a mistimed flick straight into the hands of short mid-wicket. But as luck would have it, the replays let out that the right-arm seamer overstepped on that occasion as Chennai survived the only wicket scare in the first six overs of the play.

Gaikwad didn't let the Vidarbha pacer go easily, smacking him for a huge maximum on the free-hit delivery before punching him for a boundary on the subsequent delivery.

The right-handed batter ensured he didn't throw the lifeline that he fetched in the anticipated ties, converting it into a fifty-plus score before Mohit Sharma got rid of him on 60.

At the time of writing, CSK have got to 89 for the loss of one wicket after 11 overs, with Devon Conway and Shivam Dube at the crease, and they would look to put on at least a total of 170-180 runs on the board.
