In a surprising turn of events at the U19 Cricket World Cup 2024, England's Hamza Shaikh faced an unusual and contentious dismissal during the match against Zimbabwe on Saturday. The incident unfolded in the 17th over when left-arm orthodox bowler Ryan Simbi's delivery hit Shaikh's foot, causing the ball to come to a halt.

Seizing the opportunity, the right-hander picked up the stationary ball to throw it back to wicketkeeper Ryan Kamwemba, who was approaching from behind the stumps. This action led Zimbabwe to appeal, alleging that Shaikh had failed to seek permission from the fielding team before handling the ball.

The on-field umpires, Donovan Koch and Masudur Rahman, consulted with each other and decided to review the appeal. Third umpire Nigel Llong, after carefully analyzing the replay, declared Shaikh out for obstructing the field.

This controversial decision left England at 78-3, compounding their challenges after losing the toss and being sent into bat as they managed to conclude their innings with a competitive total of 237/7 in their allotted 50 overs.

A visibly perplexed Shaikh sought an explanation from the on-field officials, expressing disbelief as he left the field. The dismissal eerily resembled a similar incident during the 2018 U19 World Cup between the West Indies and South Africa.
