In an exciting hour of play on Day 1 of the Ireland versus Zimbabwe one-off Test match, Barry McCarthy produced a brilliant peach delivery to knock over ZIM middle-order batter Dion Myers just moments before tea break.

Ireland and Zimbabwe clashed in the only Test of the tour earlier today at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast. Under overcast conditions, Ireland won the toss and opted to bowl first.

However, Zimbabwe openers Joylord Gumbie and Prince Masvaure neutralised the advantage with a 97-run partnership for the opening wicket. Ireland, meanwhile, went wicketless in the first and crucial session.

However, a short rain break helped the host get back as pacer Barry McCarthy chipped the first breakthrough. Gumbie fell short of a well-deserved half-century by just a run.

Moreover, Barry McCarthy outclassed Dion Myers, the next batter in, with some unplayable stuff. In the 39th over, the Ireland pacer bowled a fuller delivery that angled in after hitting the pitch. Myers moved forward to defend, but he ended up playing across the bat as the ball went past his willow to clip the off-stump.

The sight of the bails flying brought the crowd to its feet and energised the Irish players. On the other hand, Myers was disappointed and livid with himself for an early dismissal.

Meanwhile, at the tea break, Zimbabwe found themselves in a precarious position, having lost three crucial wickets and struggling to build partnerships. McCarthy’s breakthrough was particularly significant as he had been bowling beautifully all day long.

His executions were on point in the second session of Day 1, and the disciplined fetched him two important wickets.
