Chennai Super Kings are facing a serious conundrum with their pace attack in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season. The inexperience The team's pace batter looks feeble which was evident in their first two matches as the four-time IPL has struggled to defend totals and has conceded a significant number of extras, which is a serious concern for the team.

The CSK pacers conceded 142 runs for just two wickets in the 11 overs they bowled in front of their home crowd at the MA Chidambaram Stadium against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Some analysts have pointed out that there was very little assistance for the seamers on the Chepauk pitch.

However, the CSK pacers were consistently off-target, and their indiscipline was highlighted by the 16 wides and five no-balls they conceded in just two matches. This has caused concern for the team management, as it undermines their efforts to build pressure on the opposition.

CSK skipper, MS Dhoni, was visibly upset with his bowlers' indiscipline and expressed his dissatisfaction with their performance. After the game against Lucknow Super Giants, the former India captain remarked that the CSK pacers would have to "play under a new captain" if they did not rectify their errors. He acknowledged the severity of the situation and called for greater discipline from his bowlers.

During the CSK vs LSG game, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar suggested on-air that the team should consider imposing a penalty for bowlers who bowl wides and no-balls during the match. The Indian veteran’s suggestion was that CSK should introduce an internal disciplinary system to penalize bowlers who bowl wides and no-balls, to reduce their indiscipline.

"Maybe they should have some sort of penalty within the team," suggested Gavaskar.

Former West Indies pacer Ian Bishop also revealed that Dhoni had described the high number of extras conceded by CSK as "unacceptable" after their loss to Gujarat Titans in the tournament opener.

"We spoke to Dhoni after the last match. he said (Rajvardhan) Hangargekar did exceptionally well but no-balls are unacceptable. He said in the (post-match) interview," said Bishop.

CSK's pace attack may have raised concerns, but the team still managed to secure a 12-run victory against LSG, thanks to an impressive display by Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, and Moeen Ali. Playing their first match in front of their home crowd in almost four years, CSK treated their fans to a thrilling game. Despite this, it is uncertain how the CSK management will tackle the ongoing issues with their pace attack in the forthcoming matches.
