Smriti Mandhana scripts new record [Source: @BCCIWomen, @ICC/X.com]
Smriti Mandhana made her mark in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 with another brilliant half-century against England. The star Indian batter scored 88 runs off 60 balls, marking her ninth 50-plus score in a single calendar year.
This remarkable consistency has put her on the verge of challenging Mithali Raj’s long-standing world record.
Smriti Mandhana equals Ellyse Perry, closing in on Mithali Raj’s record
The Indian opener’s innings against England was her 34th half-century in ODI cricket overall. This was also her fifth ODI half-century of the year, showcasing just how dominant she has been in 2025.
With 9 fifty-plus score since October 2024, Smriti Mandhana has equalled Ellyse Perry and Laura Wolvaardt’s record of hitting the second most fifties in a single calendar year in WODIs.
The record for most 50-plus scores still lies with former Indian legend Mithali Raj, who hit 10 fifties in 2017.
Most 50-plus scores in WODIs in a calendar year
- 10- Mithali Raj, 2017
- 9 - Ellyse Perry, 2016
- 9 - Laura Wolvaardt, 2022
- 9- Smriti Mandhana, 2025
Smriti Mandhana started the year with a 73-run knock against Ireland in Rajkot and followed it with a massive 135-run performance. Since then, she has rarely failed, including scores of 116 and 125 in key games.
That being said, Mandhana has a golden chance to break this record, as India still has 2 more matches in the World Cup against New Zealand and Bangladesh.
If she manages another fifty in either of these games, she will claim the record for most 50-plus scores in a calendar year in Women’s ODIs.
However, despite the opener's heroics, India Women continue to tumble in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025. After South Africa and Australia, the women in blue lost to England by just 4 runs on Sunday, October 20.
With only 1 spot left in the knockouts, India must win both their upcoming games to stay in contention for the semi-finals. And their best bet is Smriti Mandhana. If she manages to get a strong start, India will be in safe hands.
