Sri Lankan middle-order batters Dinesh Chandimal and Sadeera Samarawickrama rolled out tons to flatten the Irish attack on Day 2 in Galle. The hosts resumed second morning of play at 386-4, and stretched the same to 591-6 within the next 43 overs.

With a full session and a half still left in the day, Sri Lankan spinner Prabath Jayasuriya steamrolled Ireland’s top-order by claiming the fifth five-fer of his Test career.

Chandimal, Sadeera work over weary Ireland on Day 2

Dinesh Chandimal and Sadeera Samarawickrama both plundered identical tons, and shared an unbeaten 183-run stand to take Sri Lanka past the 550-run mark. Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne, who top-scored in the innings with his 179 on Day 1, called for a declaration when his side reached 591-7.

Chandimal registered his 15th Test century while Samarawickrama’s effort marked his maiden ton in Test cricket. The latter of the two scored his runs at a strike-rate of 91.22, with 11 hits to the fence.

A total of four Sri Lankan batters hammered their respective centuries in the innings, with number three Kusal Mendis along with his captain peaking on the opening day itself.

After Sri Lanka’s declaration, Ireland lost opening batter Murray Commins for a first-ball duck within the second over. His partner James McCollum and number four Harry Tector formed the only notable partnership of the innings, with their third-wicket stand taking Ireland’s score to 74 after slumping to 4-2.

Prabath Jayasuriya put an end to their defiance and ran through the rest of Ireland’s middle-order with a five-fer. The left-arm spinner finished the day with figures of 5-42, and found much assistance from new-ball pacer Vishwa Fernando through his sublime opening gambit.

After being reduced to 108-7, Irish wicketkeeper Lorcan Tucker and Andy McBrine survived the remaining six overs of the day to take their team to 117-7, still 474 runs away from the hosts.
