In a dramatic turn of events, Indian captain Shubman Gill survived a close LBW dismissal in the ongoing fourth Test against England. Gill's narrow escape became a major highlight in the second session on day 4, with England players showing their frustration over the on-field call.
Shubman Gill Rides His Luck To Frustrate Archer And Stokes
After England posted a massive 669-run total, riding on Ben Stokes and Joe Root's sublime tons, India had a disastrous start to their second innings. Chris Woakes emerged as the wrecker-in-chief for England, dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal and B Sai Sudharsan on consecutive deliveries.
Indian captain Shubman Gill also had a nervous start to his innings, with the English bowlers consistently troubling him around the corridor of uncertainty. Soon after the second session began, Jofra Archer surprised the stylish right-hander with a vicious in-swinger.
As the full-length delivery tailed back into Gill and struck him on his left boot, the English players appealed for an LBW. However, despite the ball hitting him on the full, the umpire nodded his head in disapproval, prompting the hosts to challenge the decision by going upstairs.
The TV umpire saw the replay from multiple angles, and it actually turned out to be a really close call. It seemed like Gill's bat had a contact with the ball at the same time when it brushed his boot. Thus, as there was a lack of substantial evidence, the third umpire had to uphold the on-field call.
Having said that, it was indeed a lucky escape from Gill as any umpire would've declared him out in real time. However, the decision didn't go well with the English players, particularly Ben Stokes, who strongly believed Gill was struck plumb in front of the stumps.
Nevertheless, India have yet to lose their third wicket, with Gill and KL Rahul steadily forming a consolidating stand. As of writing, the visitors were 14 for two, with Gill and Rahul batting on 5* and 9*, respectively.
