In a battle between the ‘Supers’ of SA20, the Kings emerged victorious over the Giants in match number 22 of the 2023 season. Winning skipper Faf du Plessis unfurled the innings of the contest through his unbeaten knock in the run-chase.

Klaasen counters Coetzee, Theekshana while others falter

Durban’s Super Giants lost three wickets within the powerplay after being asked to bat first by the Joburg Super Kings. The innings mostly revolved around Heinrich Klaasen, who pumped out 65 handy runs and formed a crucial partnership with number three batter Matthew Breetzke.

Meanwhile, Breetzke scored 28, and so did opener Kyle Mayers and all-rounder Jason Holder in the death overs. The Super Giants formed a competitive 178 upfront, largely due to Klaasen’s controlled knock in the middle. For the hosts, Maheesh Theekshana and Gerald Coetzee both claimed three wickets each and were the only wicket-takers of the first innings.

Joburg Super Kings skipper and opener Faf du Plessis struck a majestic unbeaten hundred, which also marks the first in the history of SA20. The cricketer flayed the Super Giants bowlers all across the Wanderers Stadium, plundering eight boundaries and eight sixes during his 58-ball stay at the crease.

He formed a 157-run opening stand with Reeza Hendricks, where the latter contributed with a run-a-ball 45. Fittingly, Plessis also punched out the winning blow to finish the proceedings with five balls to spare.

The win granted Super Kings their fourth of the season as they jump to number four on the SA20 2023 points table.
