Mohammad Rizwan created an unprecedented record while playing the first ODI between Pakistan and South Africa in Islamabad, in Faisalabad, at Iqbal Stadium. Notably, Mohammad Rizwan etched his name in an elite list as he recorded four consecutive 50-plus scores against South Africa in ODIs.

Rizwan's fifty in first ODI vs SA makes him enter elite list!

The list of the elite record also contains names like Steve Waugh from Australia, Ijaz Ahmed from Pakistan, and Alex Hales from England, who have the most consecutive 50-plus scores against South Africa.

Most Consecutive 50+ Scores vs South Africa in ODIs:

  • 6 – Alex Hales (England) (2016–17)
  • 4 – Ijaz Ahmed (Pakistan) (1994)
  • 4 – Steve Waugh (Australia) (1998–99)
  • 4 – Mohammad Rizwan (Pakistan) (2024–25)*

Mohammad Rizwan has been a blunt force in the game where South Africa batted first and put up a total of 263 runs. Openers Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Quinton de Kock put up a stand of 98 runs before Pretorius fell in the 16th over. Tony de Zorzi couldn’t do much with the bat. Skipper Matthew Breetzke was also bundled out for 42 runs.

The middle order collapsed quickly. It was only Corbin Bosch who added 41 runs to put up a decent total on board for Pakistan to chase. Pakistan’s wreckers-in-chief were Naseem Shah and Abrar Ahmed. The pace and spin duo accounted for six wickets, while Saim Ayub, the now top-order batter-turned-spinner, also scalped two.

Pakistan pull off dramatic chase

Coming in for the chase, Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub laid a strong foundation with their 87-run stand. Babar Azam failed with only seven runs to his name. It was Mohammad Rizwan who came in at number four and played a gritty knock of 55 runs off 74 balls, including six boundaries, to drag the chase to the end.

Salman Ali Agha also chipped in with his 62 runs, as Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah saw off the game with two wickets left, completing the chase.
