Nathan Lyon took field for Australia at the historic Lord’s stadium for the second Ashes 2023 Test. The seasoned campaigner, who made his Test debut back in 2011, has now ascended to an unscaled landmark among bowlers, becoming the first-ever to do so in the formats near 150-year history.

Lyon first bowler, sixth overall to claim this record

Nathan Lyon made his Test debut for Australia back in September 2011 with an away match against Sri Lanka. From the day of his debut, the legendary off-spinner has played 99 Test matches without a break, thus forming one of the longest streaks in Test history without being dropped from the side.

Lyon’s appearance at Lord’s for the second Ashes 2023 Test marks his 100th match in the format. Among all Test players, the Australian legend became only the sixth in history, and third from his country, to play 100 successive matches.

The others to do so were England’s Alastair Cook, ex-Australian batting legends Allan Border and Mark Waugh, India’s Sunil Gavaskar and New Zealand opener Brendon McCullum, who is also England’s current Test coach.

Lyon’s achievement stands out among the rest, as he is the only bowler in the elite list to reach the coveted landmark. Moreover, he is also the first player in history to play 100 successive Tests for his country without leading them in any of those matches.

As of now, the 35-year-old has collected 495 wickets in his career at an average of 30.99. He claimed eight of them in Australia’s emphatic win over England at Edgbaston last week to give his side a 1-0 lead in the series.

With five more wickets to his name, Lyon will become only the third Australian bowler, after Glenn McGrath and late Shane Warne, to complete 500 scalps in Tests. Overall, the landmark figure has been claimed by seven players, including England’s James Anderson and Stuart Broad who are competing against Lyon at Lord’s.
