After losing the toss in all four Ashes Tests, Pat Cummins finally called it right and elected to field first on a gloomy day. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett started on a positive note, but England lost a flurry of wickets, which also included their star batter, Joe Root.

Unfortunately, Root's stay at the crease was cut short when he was dismissed for just 5 runs by Josh Hazelwood. It was a frustrating moment for him as he chopped the ball onto his stumps, expressing disappointment with a punch to his bat.

Despite the early setback, there was a silver lining for Joe Root in this match. On Day 1 of 5th Test, he achieved a remarkable milestone of scoring 6000 runs in Test matches in England. This achievement is truly worth noting and highlights his prowess as a batsman, especially when playing in familiar conditions.

Although England faced a heartbreak in the previous Test due to rain dampening their chances at reclaiming the Ashes urn in Manchester, Joe Root's achievement brought some positive news for the home team in the Ashes.

At the time of writing, England have scored 131 for 3, with Brook batting at 48.
