England's legendary batter Joe Root had a forgettable outing in the first Test against New Zealand, as he was dismissed for a three-ball duck by debutant Nathan Smith at Hagley Oval. Coming at number four, Root became Nathan Smith's second victim, with his wicket helping the hosts claim the driving seat in the high-voltage affair.
Notably, this was Joe Root's 150th Test, and he could've made it memorable by stepping up with the bat for his side. However, unfortunately, the talismanic batter let down his team and fans, being dismissed for a duck off Smith's bowling.
As soon as Smith castled Joe Root, the latter joined Australian legends Ricky Ponting and Steve Waugh as the only third batter to have recorded a duck in his 150th Test match. While Waugh got out without scoring against Pakistan in Sharjah, Ponting attained the infamous landmark during the 2010 Ashes Test at Adelaide Oval. Interestingly, the Aussie greats recorded golden ducks, while Root played three deliveries before Smith sent him packing.
New Zealand's Rampant Pace Battery Reduces England To Four Down In No Time
After Smith got rid of Root, opening batter Ben Duckett was dismissed by 46 runs off William O'Rourke's bowling. Despite batting beautifully, the swashbuckling southpaw missed out on a well-deserved fifty, with O'Rourke getting his prized scalp in the 22nd over. At the time of writing, England were tottering at 91 for four, with Harry Brook and Ollie Pope batting in the middle.
