Saurashtra’s stalwart Cheteshwar Pujara was left stranded on 99 in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25 clash against Assam. The veteran batter who is known for his marathon knocks and rock-solid technique was just one run away from his 67th first-class century, but destiny had other plans.

Cheteshwar Pujara Gets Dismssed For 99

For a player of Pujara’s stature, missing out on a century by the slimmest of margins is bound to sting. However, his 167-ball stay at the crease laden with 10 crisp boundaries, has put Saurashtra in pole position in this must-win encounter.

Winning the toss, Saurashtra decided to bat first on a turning track—a bold move given the pitch was expected to deteriorate. But their batting unit walked the talk and made the most of the conditions on Day 1.

Openers Harvik Desai (130) and Chirag Jani (80) came out all guns blazing, putting together a 146-run opening stand inside 30 overs. The duo took full advantage of the hard new ball, dispatching anything loose to the ropes and ensuring Saurashtra got off to a flyer.

By the time Cheteshwar Pujara walked in, the foundation was well set. What followed was a classic Pujara knock highlighted by his determination and patience. He anchored the innings, absorbing pressure and frustrating the Assam bowlers with his ability to leave deliveries and pick gaps effortlessly.

By stumps on Day 1, Saurashtra had stamped their authority, finishing at a commanding 361/3, with Pujara unbeaten on 95. It seemed like a century was inevitable when play resumed on Day 2.

Pujara’s Heartbreak On Day 2

Cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties and Pujara learned it the hard way. With just one run needed for his hundred, the veteran batter resumed play with his usual composure.

However, he could add just four more runs before disaster struck. Pujara fell on 99 which left him and his fans heartbroken. A century was there for the taking but fate had other ideas.

Despite missing the ton, Pujara’s knock has put Saurashtra in pole position. They are dictating terms in a must-win match, and the veteran’s knock has ensured that they remain in firm control.

With a potential Test comeback still on his radar, he will be eager to convert his next start into a big score. A century may have eluded him this time but knowing Pujara, he won’t have to wait too long before he raises his bat for three figures again.

For now, Saurashtra will be looking to drive home the advantage, and if they can secure a bonus-point win, they will have their veteran No. 3 to thank.
