Sri Lanka needed a messiah to save them in the first ODI against the Zimbabwe team, and Dilshan Madushanka stepped up to become the hero for the Island Nation as he bagged a sensational hat-trick to seal the win from the jaws of defeat at Harare. The home side had the victory in their bag, but the pacer had some other plans.
The Zimbabwe pair of Sikandar Raza, and Tony Munyonga led the foundation for a famous win with a brilliant 128-run partnership for the sixth wicket as the home side needed a tricky 299 to seal the victory. However, with only a handful of runs left, the Lankan side rolled the last dice as Madushanka was brought on and he created history for his team.
Madushanka decimates Zimbabwe with fiery spell
In the final over of the innings, Zimbabwe needed 10 runs to take the win, as Madushanka was handed the delivery. He started off with the wicket of a well-set Sikandar Raza on the very first delivery of the over. It was followed by the scalp of Brad Evans, as from a winning position, the Sri Lankan pacer pushed Zimbabwe on the back foot.
The icing on the cake was the final wicket of Richard Ngarava which helped him take a stunning hat-trick, and it secured a famous win for the visiting side.
Madushanka, just the 3rd SL bowler to grab hat-trick vs ZIM
With three wickets in three balls, the 24-year-old became just the third Sri Lankan bowler to grab a hat-trick vs the Zimbabwe side. The other two were Chaminda Vaas (2001), and Wanindu Hasaranga (2017). Courtesy of his breath-taking bowling, this turned out to be Sri Lanka’s lowest win-margin vs Zimbabwe in ODIs (7 runs).
