In a significant development, experienced Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has written to the BCCI, asking for an indefinite break from Test cricket. As reported by Express Sports, Iyer has cited back issues as the reason for considering taking a break from the purest format for an unspecified period.

Iyer writes to BCCI over unavailability for Test season

Shreyas Iyer was sidelined from India's Test scheme of things after failing to prove his mettle in several crucial series against Australia, South Africa and England. However, when the selectors gave him a golden opportunity to reclaim his spot, Iyer couldn't prove his mettle in the domestic tournaments, including the Duleep Trophy as well as the Test series against Australia-A.

Now, a fresh report from the Express Sports has revealed that Iyer has formally informed the BCCI about his unavailability for Test selection amid his struggles with fatigue and back stiffness. The Mumbaikar has stated that his body is currently unable to take the toll of Test cricket, as the format needs a player to be fully fit to last for five days on the field.

Iyer's topsy-turvy Test career so far

Hailed for his grit and scintillating stroke play, Shreyas Iyer made his Test debut for India against New Zealand in Kanpur back in 2021. Although he had a great start to his Test career, slamming a couple of breathtaking knocks in his initial games against New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Iyer's underwhelming returns, particularly in the subsequent assignments against England, forced the selectors to ignore him for red-ball cricket.

With the batter struggling with form and fitness issues, the chances of his Test comeback seem bleak at the moment.
