Brief Scores: Sri Lanka: 279 all out (49.3 overs) [Charith Asalanka: 108 (105), Pathum Nissanka: 41 (36); Tanzim Hasan Sakib 3/80 (10), Shoriful Islam 2/51 (9.3)] lost to Bangladesh: 282-7 (41.1 overs) [Najmul Hossain Shanto: 90 (101), Shakib Al Hasan: 82 (65); Dilshan Madushanka 3/69 (10), Angelo Mathews 2/39 (7.1)] by three wickets.

Bangladesh dashed Sri Lanka’s semi-final hopes and claimed a consolation win in match number 38 of the 2023 World Cup.

Charith Asalanka pounds 108 to lead SL recovery

Bangladesh’s speedster Shoriful Islam struck within his opening over to remove Kusal Perera, before Pathum Nissanka staged a 61-run recovery with captain Kusal Mendis for the second wicket. Nissanka, along with number four batsman Sadeera Samarawickrama both listed 41 each from their ends, doing so at better than run-a-ball.

Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan struck twice in the middle overs, and also “timed out” Sri Lankan veteran Angelo Mathews under controversial circumstances as they slumped to 135-5 at the halfway stage. Charith Asalanka, at number five, led his side’s counterattacking response in the backend with an appealing 108-run knock.

The cricketer top-scored for Sri Lanka and ensured his side posted a competitive 279 upfront.

Apart from Shakib’s twin strikes, Tanzim Hasan Sakib also claimed three wickets in the innings, including two in the death to finish with 3-80 from his 10 overs.

Shakib, Shanto overcome Madushanka in run-chase epic

As has been the case throughout the tournament, Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka once again struck with the new-ball, this time accounting for both Bangladesh openers within the powerplay.

Fortunately for Bangladesh, their captain Shakib Al Hasan and number three Najmul Hossain Shanto stood up to the occasion and scored 169 runs for the third wicket. Both cricketers missed out on their respective centuries, with Shanto top-scoring in the innings through his boundary-laden 90.

Their partnership extended Bangladesh’s run-chase response to 210-2 before their dismissals in quick succession led to a semi-batting collapse in the middle order. Angelo Mathews and Maheesh Theekshana shared four wickets between them until the Bangladeshi tail overcame the Sri Lankan total with nearly nine overs to spare.
