On day four of the ongoing first Ashes Test at Edgbaston, England's star batter Joe Root fell victim to a careless dismissal. Root, known for his batting prowess, ventured out to play the off-spinner Nathan Lyon but misjudged the turn of the ball, resulting in a straightforward stumping for Alex Carey.

Surprisingly, this marked the first time Root had been stumped in his illustrious Test career spanning 131 matches, during which he amassed over 11,000 runs.

This achievement propelled him ahead of renowned Indian cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli in the record for the most runs scored by a batter before being stumped for the first time in Tests, with a total of 11,168 runs. Root now trails only the West Indies' former great, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, in this category.

In addition, Root ranks second on the list of scoring the most runs in Test cricket without getting stumped, with only a marginal difference of 246 runs behind the legendary Chanderpaul.

Root's dismissal occurred in the 26th over of the innings when he and Harry Brook were aggressively pushing for an increased lead. While attempting to hit spinner Lyon for a six, Root failed to connect, allowing the ball to spin past his bat and conclude his enterprising innings of 46 off just 55 deliveries.

Consequently, the English captain became Lyon's first wicket of the day and the fifth of the match for the Australian bowler.

Earlier in the Test match, on day three, Root had already scored a sublime century in the first innings, but faced a challenging period under overcast conditions.

After England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett fell cheaply, Root took charge at the crease. By stumps on day three, England's lead had reached 35 runs before persistent rain prevented any further play.

Most Runs Scored in Tests before Getting Stumped Out

  1. Shivnarine Chanderpaul - 11414 runs
  2. Joe Root - 11168 runs
  3. Graeme Smith - 8800 runs
  4. Virat Kohli - 8195 runs
  5. Sachin Tendulkar - 7419 runs

Talking about the ongoing Ashes fixture, England have got bundled out for 273 runs in their second innings, giving the Aussies a target of 281 runs to chase. For the visitors, Marnus Labuschagne and the centurion from the last innings, Usman Khawaja, are in the middle with the score board reading 70/1 after 20 overs.
