Having conquered the Australian challenge in Ahmedabad, Team India move up north in Delhi at the Arun Jaitley Stadium for their next match of the ICC World Cup 2023. Rohit Sharma & Co. face off against the rising giant killers Afghanistan in Match 9 of the marquee tournament on Wednesday, October 11.

The venue in the capital city of India, historically known as 'Kotla' due to its close proximity to the citadel fort built on the adjacent road, has been one of the traditional centres of Indian cricket. Often criticised for its structure and facilities, the stadium has undergone massive upgradation for the World Cup and was packed when it hosted its first game of the tournament between South Africa and Sri Lanka.

The ground hosted its first One-Day International back in 1982 and has since witnessed 56 ODIs played bilaterally and in multiple-team events. Delhi hosted the group-stage encounters of the 2011 edition of the World Cup. Notably, only 21 of the total ODIs played at the venue have featured India.

In terms of stats, India have enjoyed their time out in Delhi. The tournament hosts have clinched victories in 13 of their previous 21 One-Day Internationals played. Despite South Africa piling on the Lankan agony, Delhi has been one of the lower scoring venues in India.

Of the 56 ODIs played in Delhi, 29 times team winning the toss has decided to chase considering the dew factor, which makes it easier in the second half on a ground with smaller boundary dimensions. The toss, however, hasn't been a guarantee of victory at the venue with teams fielding first winning just as many games as the sides opting to bat first.

Given their all-round strength, India can dominate Afghanistan irrespective of their choice at the toss. However, the tournament favourites could opt to bowl first with the intention to take the 'Rashid Khan' factor out of equation under dew and further bolster their NRR in what promises to be a stiff race for the final four slots.
