Travis Head scored a hundred in the run-chase of World Cup 2023 final as Australia won by six wickets (Source: X.com)
This brings us to the end of our coverage for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. What a 46-day ride it has been. Australia will wake up happy. While, Indians go their beds with gloom.
Nonetheless, cricket does not stop for anyone. These two teams will meet in a matter of a few days. This time in a T20I series. Join us then. For now, I bid adieu, on behalf of OneCricket, bye-bye!
Australian players are on the podium and they are celebrating with the trophy. What a moment!
The fireworks go up as Australian captain is handed the prestigious trophy by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles.
Pat Cummins | Australian skipper: I think we saved our best for last. We have been batting first pretty much for whole tournament and we thought it is a good night to chase down the target. Didn't really spin as much as we thought either. The boys were fantastic, we got an aging side and still everyone is throwing themselves on the field. We thought 300 might have been tough but achievable on that wicket, really chuffed with 240. Magnificent. Marnus with a cool head and Travis does what he does on the biggest stage, showed a lot of character. The selectors have backed him in and it is a big risk that we took and it paid off. I was pretty happy throughout the bowling innings. You look around and it is a special moment no matter whatever happened tonight. You gotta go and win the World Cup, you can't wait for it to happen. This year will be remembered for a long, long time and we had a lot of success over the winter and this one peaks it all. At the top of the mountain.
Australian players are collecting their medals.
Rohit Sharma | Indian skipper: The result has not gone our way. We were not good enough today. We tried everything but it wasn't supposed to be. 20-30 runs more would have been good, KL and Kohli were stitching a good partnership and we were looking at 270-280 but we kept losing wickets. When you have 240 on the board, you want to take wickets but credit to Head and Labuschagne for putting us out of the game, but I feel wicket got slightly better to bat under lights. Don't want to give that as an excuse. We didn't put enough runs on the board. Credit to those two guys in the middle for putting up an outstanding partnership.
Indian players are being honoured with the medals.
Player of the Tournament: Virat Kohli (765 runs in 11 matches)
Travis Head (Player of the Match): Never expected this, not in a million years, truly an exceptional day. Lot better than sitting on the couch at home. Really glad to contribute, the first twenty balls I played gave me a lot of confidence and yea I was able to carry through. The way Mitch Marsh came out and took the game on, he set the tone. That was the energy we wanted and we knew the wicket may get tough. It was a great decision to bowl first after winning the toss. I felt the wicket got better as the day went on. It took a little bit of spin, it paid dividends. Nice to be a part of it, nice to play a role in all of that. He’s (Rohit Sharma) probably the unluckiest man in the world. Again, it's (fielding) something that I worked hard on. I couldn't imagine getting a hundred, couldn't probably imagine holding onto that one. Was great to hold on to that catch. Important to look after your team-mates, to be able to do that on the big stage in front of a full house is a nice thing. (On joining the list of centurions in WC finals - Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist and Head) Definitely third on that list, it's a nice one to join, nice to be here and nice to contribute. I'll just tell the boys that I'm looking forward to the reunion.
Sadness all over India!
Maxwell has hit the winning runs for Australia in the last two World Cup finals they have played.
India's Kryptonite!
Stay with us as we will bring you all the updates from the post-final ceremony.
AUSTRALIA WIN!!!
Maxwell hits the winning shot as Australia gain a six-wicket victory. Australia cap off their campaign with another title. They have now won six ODI World Cup trophies. What a team.
India's ICC trophy curse continues. Another brilliant performance for the better part of the tournament culminates with a disappointment. Sad faces all around in the Indian captain. Rohit heads back to the dressing room after shaking hands with a glum look.
Head departs!!!
Siraj strikes. Head played a glory shot. But got holed out. Unfortunate that winning runs did not come off his bat.
Australia are one hit away from winning the trophy.
50 FOR LABUSCHAGNE!!!
He has been the silent assassin, killing India's chances of a win with his 99-ball half-century. There were doubts on his place in the squad, but as it panned out, he delivered when it mattered the most.
Only a matter of time before we see Australia with the title. Head is doing it in style now and it would be fitting if he bats through the chase, hitting the winning runs.
Only a formality remains. Indian players' shoulders have dropped. They know they have let off another opportunity to win an ICC trophy. As for Australia, they are set to extend their dominance on world cricket.
100 FOR HEAD!!!
What a hundred. This has come in the biggest match of his career. He becomes only the second batter to score a century in the run-chase in a World Cup final. And this probably has sealed Australia's win.
Australia 2003 🤝 Australia 2023
India have taken a review forn an LBW. Labuschagne is the batter in question. It's looking close. Umpire's call saves him. Luck running in Australia's favour.
Head is turning it on. He is dealing in boundaries as the target continues to drop. It's going against the hopes of every Indian fan.
Target under 100 runs!
Australia need 97 runs to win with 24 overs and seven wickets remaining. It's their game to lose.
The match is in Australia's territory. They are poised to lift another trophy. Only a self destruction act can deny them the win, I reckon.
50 FOR HEAD!
What an innings this has been. He has soaked all the pressure, taking Australia to another World Cup title. He knows there is still work left to do and would want to take this game further deep.
Australia are not playing the cricket they are known for, but what Head and Labuschagne are doing is proving to be as effective as one could imagine. The duo has been so professional in their batting display, curbing their egos.
Both these batters have survive through the testing period. It now all depends upon them how they approach this run-chase. Kuldeep Yadav is looking flat.
Head is batting with a calm head on his shoulders. He is focusing on strike-rotation, but at the same time no bad delivery is being spared. India need a wicket now.
Labuschagne and Head are relying on singles. Strike-rotation is their best friend at the moment. They cannot afford to lose another wicket. Indian spinners have reduced the scoring-rate.
Iyer sledging Labuschagne!
Powerplay ends in India's favour!
Australia have maintained a run-rate of 6, but India have taken three crucial wickets. The momentum has swung in their favour and they must continue to keep up the good work, taking wickets regularly.
AUS 60/3 in 10 overs
India are dictating terms. Australia are under immense pressure. Kohli is hyping up the crowd. This is a fairytale start to the innings.
Smith walks off!!!
Bumrah is at again. He traps Steve Smith on the pads. The on-field umpire adjudges him out. He considers to take a review but ends up against it. The ball-tracking shows the impact was outside. A big blunder from him..India are on top now.
KL Rahul Creates History!
Bumrah, YOU BEAUTY!!!
Stadium erupts again. This time, it's Bumrah who has provided the reason of celebration. Marsh sways hard at a wide delivery. The ball catches a nick and goes to the gloves of the wicket-keeper. Kohli is pumped, so do entire India.
Shami has taken a wicket. But, he has not been on point, doing extra in search of another wicket. Meanwhile, Australia are taking full advantage of it and are going hammer and tongs.
Lots of plays and misses. I sense it, Australia is going to give a chance soon. India need to be ready to grab it.
India draws first blood!!!
Crowd erupts as Mohammad Shami dismisses Warner in his first over. Similar to what was done in the over before. But Kohli does not make a mistake this time. Shami has developed a knack of it. India are ecstatic and its game on...
That was a chance!
Warner pokes at a delivery going away from him. It goes past Kohli, who did not even attempt to go for the catch. Maybe, he was in double minds.
Run-chase begins!
David Warner and Travis Head are at the crease. Jasprit Bumrah is ready to come steaming in. The battle is about to commence.
Alright, we are done with the mid-innings show. It's time to get back to cricket. Nerves kicking in as an Indian fan. Australia are ahead. But, the Indian bowling attack is not the one to be underestimated.
Ahmedabad gets ELECTRIC During Mid-innings
There is a performance going in the venue by the singers in this mid innings break. Pritam Da, Akasa Singh, Jonita Gandhi and Amit Mishra are performing.
AUSTRALIA TO CHASE 241 RUNS
India have managed to post a below-par total but the surface isn’t a belter for batting and they can certainly believe in themselves to defend this total. The ball is turning a fair bit and the Australian batters will have to bat extremely well to chase down this total. Also, not to forget the pressure of the final. Don’t go anywhere as we will be back with the Australian reply shortly.
Indian hopes shattered!
Hazlewood gets Surya.WICKETTTT!!!! The last recognized batter of India departs! Suryakumar Yadav bites the dust and Hazlewood shows his worth yet again. Hoff bangs it in short yet again and bowls a short ball angling into the body of the batter. SKY tries to get inside the line on the back foot but plays through the pickup pull way too early. The slowness of the surface does it for Yadav and the ball loops to the right of the keeper off Surya's gloves.
STARC CLEANS UP SHAMI!
Edged and gone! Starc is very good at cleaning up the tail. Gets his third wicket of the innings, and the left-arm pacer is breathing fire at the moment. India slip further into the deep ocean.
Starc gets the BIG FISH! 🐟
Set batter, KL Rahul departs after scoring 66 off 107. A loud appeal and Illingworth raises his finger. Rahul knows he has edged it and starts walking back to the pavilion.
FOUR!!! SKY BLAZES ON TO THE BOUNDARY 🤩
A boundary after a long time! It has come after 76 legal balls, and the Sea of Blue has risen up yet again. India, India chants as SKY gets one away in the gap.
WICKET!! ❌
The ball is reversing and Hazlewood is too good with it. Jadeja nicks one behind to the keeper and he departs. Half of the Indian side is back in the hut.
FIFTY FOR KL Rahul !
Kannur Lokesh Rahul gets to his 2nd fifty against Australia in this tournament. A Klaasic innings under immense pressure and the Karnataka batter needs to carry on through to the end of the innings.
Ravindra Jadeja walks out to bat at number 6.
WICKET!!! King Kohli Departs
Dragged on. The crowd is silenced and Cummins is pumped. All the Indian fans in the stadium are in disbelief. So is Kohli who watches the edge of his bat and starts taking the long walk back to the pavilion.
FIFTY FOR KING KOHLI! 5️⃣ 0️⃣
And it's the King in front of a massive crowd in Ahmedabad! World Cup final and Virat Kohli turns up with yet another fifty!
Kohli and KL Rahul stabilising the Indian forces 🇮🇳
Uh-OH!
Shreyas Iyer GONE!!
Edged and gone. One brings two and in-form Shreyas Iyer departs. The crowd is silenced and that's what Cummins wanted. He is leading from the front as India lose their third.
OH NO!!!!! Wicket!!!!!! Rohit Sharma 😵
Man oh Man! Goodness gracious! Sensational catch from Travis Head. Dear Oh Dear! The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is out once again in the 40s. Pin-drop silence in the stadium as the Hitman departs 3-short of his well-deserved hundred.
SIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🔥
Rohit Sharma knocks it out the park
FOUR AND FOUR!!!
KING KOHLI IS HERE TO WIN!
WICKET!!!! India lose Shubman Gill
STARC WITH THE FIRST WICKET OF THE WORLD CUP FINAL and Shubman Gill fails to put up a show in the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Starc fires it short and just around the waist line. Did not bounce as expected and Gill went for the pull shot. It was more like his short arm jab type pull but picks out Adam Zampa at mid on here. A normal catch from the leggie and India lose the first wicket. He failed to read the bounce off the surface and gets it off the inside part of the ball. Zampa rolls on to grab the catch to maintain his poise. Huge moment in context of the game.
FOUR!!! SKIPPER ROHIT HITS THE BOUNDARY!
ROHIT SHARMA GIVING THE AUSSIES A RUN FOR THEIR MONEY!
THE MATCH IS ON!
SHARMA JI AND PRINCE GILL ARE ALL SET TO TAKE CHARGE!
The Stage is set 🔥
The teams are ready for their respective national anthem.

Should India win the toss? 🧐
The toss is about to begin soon!
📍 Scenes at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad #IndvsAus:
What happened when India and Australia met in the previous game?
It was the 5th game in the ongoing tournament. Both sides were playing their opening match. Australia won the toss and opted to bat first at Chepauk. David Warner and Steven Smith got a start before a collective bowling performance led by Ravindra Jadeja's 3/28 skittled the Cummins-led side to 199.
India were rocked early, and three of the top four batters bagged ducks before Virat Kohli and KL Rahul absorbed the pressure, scoring respective half-centuries to guide the team past the victory line with more than eight overs to spare and 6 wickets in hand.
TEAM PREVIEW AUSTRALIA:
Aussies, on the other hand, have played good cricket but have not played a perfect game so far in this World Cup. They were scratchy with the bat against the Proteas as well in the semifinal but managed to get over the line. However, they are a team full of match-winners who know how to deliver in big matches.
AP Photo
Undoubtedly, their strength in the batting department are their openers, David Warner and Travis Head. Warner has scored 528 runs and his experience and big-match credentials will be key. Head with his aggressive strokeplay can take the bowling line-ups apart something which India would have to be vary of. Their middle order though is a cause of worry as Steve Smith has not lived upto his billing and except Maxwell, no one has been able to deliver impact performances from the middle order.
On the bowling front, Adam Zampa with 22 wickets has been their trump card but it is the trio of Starc,Hazlewood and Pat Cummins that need to put pressure on India with early wickets with the new ball. Starc and Hazlewood did rattle India with the new ball in the group stage, and they would like to replicate that, and hunt down India in the game that matters the most.
TEAM PREVIEW INDIA:
The Rohit Sharma-led Indian team have dominated this home World Cup and are coming into this game on the back of an impressive win over Kiwis in the semifinal. They are on a 10-match winning streak in this World Cup, and it is their captain, Rohit Sharma who has set the tone for most of those wins with his belligerent strokeplay at the top of the order. He has scored 550 runs at a strike rate of over 124 while his young opening partner, Shubman Gill has also found his touch in the last few games after a slow start to the tournament. The Narendra Modi Stadium has also been a happy hunting ground for Gill and expect him to fire in the big final.
