Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has commented on the surprising victory of the Gujarat Titans during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 tournament. The renowned commentator stated that the Titans had the ‘worst’ performance during the IPL 2022 but still managed to emerge victorious in their maiden season.

"They had the worst performance in the IPL 2022 auction but ended up winning the title. There were huge gambles they played," Manjrekar said on Star Sports.

During the final match at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the Titans defeated the Rajasthan Royals to clinch the coveted IPL trophy. The upcoming 2023 season will begin with defending champions Gujarat Titans hosting the four-time IPL winners Chennai Super Kings in the opening match at Ahmedabad.

Manjrekar highlighted that the Titans took significant risks during the tournament. He pointed out that the Titans made Hardik Pandya their captain, even though he had been released by the Mumbai Indians. According to Manjrekar, Pandya's success as captain was unexpected, and his strong performance at the tournament earned him the honor of leading the Indian T20I team.

"Take the decision of appointing Hardik Pandya as the captain for that matter. Who'd have imagined he'd become such a brilliant captain?” added the veteran cricketer.

Additionally, the erstwhile cricketer noted that David Miller, who had previously underperformed in the IPL, had an outstanding season with the Titans. His exceptional performance in the IPL carried over into his international career, which was a significant boost for the tea,

Manjrekar further commented that the Gujarat Titans were "built and supported by realists" and he expects the team to continue with the same level of confidence and performance in the upcoming 2023 season. He noted that the team has not changed significantly since their maiden season, and he expects them to continue to win games.

Gujarat Giants are set to commence their title defense against Chennai Super Kings on Friday, March 31 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
