It is a bittersweet feeling for cricket fans as the longest format is back, and with it, the thrill of Test cricket. However, this new chapter begins with a sense of nostalgia and emotional transition. India, now led by a young Shubman Gill, is playing against England in the opening Test at Headingley, Leeds. India will miss Ravichandran Ashwin, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma.

This shift and emotional transition was shared by Prithi Narayanan, wife of veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. She took to Instagram on the morning of the match to share her thoughts.

"Test match day for India, and I woke up with many mixed feelings. Have to find a different way to love it and unlearn the only way I knew to," Prithi Narayanan wrote on Instagram Stories.

When Did R Ashwin Retire From Test Cricket?

It is important to note that R Ashwin’s retirement came midway through the BGT in December 2024. The former bowler hung up his boots after the third Test at the Gabba in Brisbane. With 537 Test wickets, Ashwin is second only to Anil Kumble in India's all-time wicket-takers in international cricket.

In the longest format of the game, Ashwin has taken 537 wickets at an economy of 2.83 and an average of 24.00. With the bat, the ace spinner has made 3503 runs at a strike rate of 54.53 and an average of 25.75.

After Ashwin, Indian batting giants Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma also announced their retirements from Test cricket just days before the squad for the England tour was revealed.

Fresh Faces Take The Field

With the veterans stepping aside, the Indian team has turned to its next generation. Sai Sudharsan has been handed his Test debut, and Karun Nair returned to the squad after a seven-year hiatus. In Leeds, England skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bowl first, adding pressure to the fresh Indian batting order to adapt quickly to English conditions.
