Zak Crawley ruled out for first two Tests

England batsman Zak Crawley has been ruled out of the first two Tests against India. He sustained an injury during England’s practice session in Chennai on Tuesday, 2 February. Crawley slipped on the floor while leaving the dressing room.

In an official statement from England cricket, it was confirmed that the batsman has jarred his right wrist, which has sprained the joint and led to local inflammation.

Crawley, who had an underwhelming tour of Sri Lanka was slated to bat at number 3 in the first Test. He was dismissed by left-hand off-spinner Lasith Embuldeniya in all four innings.

The first Test is slated to begin from February 5.

Wasim Jaffer feels India should start afresh against England

Former India Test opener and a legend of Indian domestic cricket, Wasim Jaffer is of the opinion that India should start afresh for the four-Test match series against England and no0t rest on their laurels. India scripted history when they won the series against Australia not long ago. However, Jaffer believes that despite such a big win, they should put that behind them and look for what’s at stake in the upcoming series. This will be a huge series for both teams as the qualification for the ICC Test Championship final is up for grabs. India is currently leading the Test Championship chart but a series loss to England will wipe away their chances of contesting in the final against New Zealand. During an exclusive interview with Times of India, Jaffer said, "India will be pumped up. It's a new series. India has to forget what happened in Australia, they need to start afresh against England. “ ‘The win in Australia was a huge shot in the arm for the Indian team. Not only did they humble the Australians with a severely depleted squad, they did it in foreign conditions. Now, back on home territory, the game plans will need to change. India has a clear edge over England in head to head in Test matches in India. However, England has always given India a tough fight and they remain the last team who defeated India in a Test series at home back in 2012-13. India thrashed England 4-0 when the two teams last met in India. So there is no doubt about the fact that India will start as outright favourites. "Obviously, India holds an advantage because they are playing at home. But you can't take anything for granted. Whatever happened in Australia, you need to leave that behind, take that confidence and start afresh," Jaffer said. One of the biggest takeaways from the India-Australia series was the performance of the youngsters. A relatively 2nd string Indian side defeated Australia in the final Test with no experience at all, especially in the bowling department. "I never imagined someone like Washington Sundar will play such a big role (in Australia). Someone like Shardul who didn't have a memorable Test debut a few years back will impress this much. He got injured and had to leave the field. It never looked like he will play a Test match so soon. But the kind of comeback he made and the performance he showed, was just amazing. Before the IPL, who knew there will be a T Natarajan who will be making debuts in all formats and that too in one series. They all performed with flying colours. It was an amazing display by these youngsters," Jaffer told TimesofIndia.com. "I am sure these people will perform really well against England (too)," Jaffer concluded.

Michael Vaughan rates Rishabh Pant as the most enjoyable cricketer with Stokes

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has heaped praises on Indian stumper Rishabh Pant after his heroics in the Test series Down Under. He compared Pant’s attacking instincts with none other than Virender Sehwag, who is regarded as one of the finest Test openers of all time. He further added that he loves watching Pant bat and is one of the most enjoyable cricketers along with Ben Stokes. “When Pant goes out to bat, I watch. I would not want to be next in because you know things will happen. But if he continues to play the game with the joy and energy he has at the moment as if he is still an 11-year-old then he will pose so many challenges to the opposing team," Vaughan was quoted as saying by Sky Sports. Further comparing Pant with Sehwag, Vaughan said that just like Sewage instilled the fear among opposition bowlers, Pant is also following the same footsteps. The Australian captain Tim Paine and the whole team was taken aback by Pant’s approach and found themselves in a corner while trying to play defensive. "Sehwag put the fear into opposing bowlers and Pant has the same ability at six to do the same. He will make mistakes and get out for low scores at times but he will also win so many games," Vaughan said. Pant played a pivotal role in India’s historic Test series victory in Australia and finished as the leading run-scorer of India in the 4 match series. India was drubbed badly by the hosts in the Adelaide Test and to make matter worse, they had to miss the services of Virat Kohli for the last 3 Test matches and was further pegged back with injuries to several frontline players. They somehow managed to field a playing XI for the final Test in Gabba which was perhaps not even their 2nd string team. Pant smashed a sensational counter-attacking 97 in Sydney and gave India realistic chances off pulling off a historic win. In the final Test, he remained unbeaten on 87 and saw India through to a memorable Test match and series victory.
