Winning the series in India is an ultimate challenge for Australia: Glenn McGrath

Former fast bowler Glenn McGrath has reckoned that the biggest challenge for the Australian Test team will be to secure a victory in India.

Australia is scheduled to tour India for a four-match Test series in February-March next year, which will be their final assignment in the World Test Championship 2021-23 cycle.

This year, the Aussie red-ball team has shown promise in subcontinent conditions by securing a 1-0 victory against Pakistan and drawing the Sri Lanka series 1-1.

However, Australia's last Test series victory in India dates back to 2004, wherein they won 2-1, with McGrath taking 14 wickets in four games.

“Obviously the single biggest challenge for Australia is coming to India, performing well and winning the series. We were lucky enough to do it in 2004. You’ve got to come up with good plans, the batsmen have to learn to adapt on turning pitches and the bowlers have to learn to bowl in those conditions," said McGrath.

The 52-year-old pacer believes the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a good help to the Australian players to gauge subcontinent pitches and prepare themselves to play proficiently against spin bowling.

McGrath took a total of 33 wickets in his eight red-ball appearances for Australia in India. On being asked about the skills needed for overseas bowlers to succeed in India, he thinks it's quite critical to adapt to the lengths.

Furthermore, the former pacer added the bowlers need to execute their plans for a longer duration.
