WI vs IND 2022 | Fans protest over Arshdeep’s exclusion as Avesh Khan makes ODI debut

The second ODI between India and hosts West Indies took place at the Queen’s Park Oval. Avesh Khan made his ODI debut in the match as he shared the new-ball with senior pacer Mohammed Siraj.

Khan’s debut meant that Arshdeep Singh was yet again overlooked by the team management. The Punjab-based cricketer played just one match during India’s trip to England earlier this month where he impressed one-and-all with his tight bowling at the death.

The lanky speedster also enjoyed a profitable IPL 2022 campaign for the Punjab Kings, maintaining an economy of 7.70 despite bowling the most difficult overs of the innings throughout the tournament.

Much to everyone’s surprise, Singh was omitted from the starting XI of the side led by Shikhar Dhawan, his IPL teammate.

Arshdeep’s repeated exclusion from the playing XI prompted several fans to express their resentment on Twitter. Here is a look at some of the fan reactions after Team India announced their playing XI for the second ODI.

West Indies, trailing 0-1 in the three-match series, won the toss and opted to bat first. At the time of publishing, they reached 63 in eight overs with openers Shai Hope and Kyle Mayers still at the crease.

Debutant Avesh Khan reaped expensive figures in his opening gambit, conceding 36 runs in his first three overs.

''The bowlers have played in the IPL, so they have exposure''- Yuzvendra Chahal

India's white-ball specialist Yuzvendra Chahal has opined that young bowlers, especially the seamers, have benefitted from playing against the best players in the world consistently during the Indian Premier League (IPL). Over the course of the last two years, India has produced a number of quality seamers like T Natarajan, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, Prasidh Krishna and Umran Malik. In the ongoing ODI series against the West Indies, India has gone with the likes of Siraj, Krishna and Avesh. While Krishna played in the 1st game, Avesh made his ODI debut in the ongoing game. "It's a young team. The bowlers have played in the IPL, so they have exposure and they create a good attack," Chahal was quoted by India Today. The rookie seamers came under severe pressure in the last game but Siraj kept his nerves till the end to help the visitors eke out a 3-run win. "I loved starting late as it meant going against power-hitters"- Yuzvendra Chahal Speaking of the 1st ODI, Chahal was once again amongst the wickets. The wrist-spinner claimed two crucial scalps of Brandon King and Rovman Powell in his 2nd spell to peg the Windies back. Reacting to his performance, Chahal said that he loved the challenge of bowling on a surface that wasn't offering him much and against batters who were looking to attack every ball. "I loved starting late as it meant going against power-hitters. They played well with the ball not spinning early on. Then we wanted to get 2-3 wickets to bring it in our favour and did. It's great to see how they're playing and take the game close, as exciting ODIs are good," he added. Meanwhile, Kyle Mayers' blistering cameo (39 off 23) has helped the West Indies get off to a great start. West Indies posted a target of 312 to the visitors thanks to a brilliant ton from Shai Hope.
