Why KKR should go after Nayar [Source: @GoatGambhir97/x.com]
The inevitable has happened and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have reportedly sacked India men's team's batting coach, Abhishek Nayar. The former India batter came into the Indian setip on the recomendation of head coach, Gautam Gambhir, but his stint was underwhelming.
The decision came up a s surprise as Nayar was only appointed last year, but two poor series against New Zealand and Australia, Down Under ended his tenure with the team. However, not everything is lost for him as there is an Indian Premier League (IPL) side which needs his services and that is the Kolkata Knight Riders. Nayar worked previously with them during the title winning campaign in 2024 and here are two key reasons why KKR should once again go after him.
He knows the KKR setup in and out
Nayar was a part of the KKR coaching team for many years and he knows the KKR setup in and out. In-fact, he worked closely with the likes of Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Rinku Singh, and Rinku even credits the tactical mind of Nayar to bring the best out of his batting.
Nayar worked tirelessly with Rinku and was the one who backed him during his darkest hours. Plus, he was the one who helped the likes of Shreyas Iyer overcome the short-ball issues and with his tactical and batting knowledge, KKR could do wonders in the batting department.
KKR batting is struggling at the moment
The IPL 2025 match against Punjab Kings was a prime example that KKR batters, ever-since their batting coach Nayar left have been struggling. In earlier seasons, their batting looked confident and everyone was doing their task with ease. However, this season, Rinku has not taken his game to the next level, Russell has been a flop show, Venkatesh Iyer has been average, and barring Ajinkya Rahane, KKR batting looks weak and clueless.
Nayar was the one who worked with KKR batters during his previous tenure and to improve the batting once again, KKR should call him back in the team.
