Why is Shaheen Afridi Not Playing Sydney Test? Pakistan Skipper Shan Masood Explains

Pakistan captain Shan Masood revealed the rationale behind the decision not to include Shaheen Shah Afridi in the playing XI for the third and final Test against Australia in Sydney. Despite losing the series 2-0, Pakistan made significant changes, sidelining opener Imam-ul-Haq and pacer Shaheen  Afridi. The decision was particularly surprising given Shaheen's expected role as the main bowler, especially in the absence of Naseem Shah.

Masood defended the move, emphasizing Shaheen's workload in recent times. The left-arm pacer had bowled 99.2 overs in the first two Tests, the most in the series. Masood expressed concern about Shaheen's previous injury history, stating:

"Shaheen Afridi has bowled most overs in world cricket in recent times. He gives his 150 percent in the training sessions as well. He keeps motivating his teammates. He is our main player. We'll make sure we look after Shaheen Afridi really well."

With Mir Hamza and Aamer Jamal joining Hasan Ali in a three-man pace attack and off-spinner Sajid Khan getting a chance, Pakistan aimed to address their winless streak in Australia since 1995. The decision to rest Shaheen highlights the team's commitment to managing his workload and ensuring his long-term fitness.

As Pakistan faces the challenge of playing on a good batting track in Sydney, attention will be on David Warner, who is set to play his final Test in front of his home crowd. The captain's decision to prioritize Shaheen Afridi's well-being underlines the importance of managing key players for Pakistan's future success.
