The Champions Trophy 2025 is just around the corner and the ICC has announced the list of umpires and match referees for the big event. But one name that’s missing is Nitin Menon.

Menon is one of the best umpires in world cricket. He has officiated in 40 Tests, 75 ODIs, and 75 T20Is. His calls are sharp, his decision-making is top-notch and he rarely gets things wrong. So, when his name wasn’t on the list, fans were left wondering—what happened?

Why Is Nitin Menon Not Umpiring In Champions Trophy?

No, the ICC didn’t drop him. Nitin Menon chose to sit this one out. According to reports, he refused to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, citing personal reasons. No further details have been shared, but it’s clear that this was his own call.

Even if he had traveled, he wouldn’t have been able to officiate India’s matches since ICC rules require neutral umpires for global tournaments. With India playing their group-stage matches in Dubai, Menon’s involvement would have been limited anyway.

Javagal Srinath Also Opts Out

It’s not just Menon who’s missing. Javagal Srinath, the only Indian match referee in the ICC Elite Panel, has also taken leave.

Srinath has been on the road for months, officiating in India’s home series against England. He confirmed that he asked the ICC for time off because he had spent too much time away from home in recent months. So, both India’s top officials—Menon and Srinath—are skipping this tournament.

With Menon and Srinath not available, the ICC has assembled an experienced panel of umpires.

Champions Trophy 2025 Umpires

  • Kumar Dharmasena, Chris Gaffaney, Michael Gough, Adrian Holdstock, Richard Illingworth, Richard Kettleborough, Ahsan Raza, Paul Reiffel, Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, Rodney Tucker, Alex Wharf, Joel Wilson.

Champions Trophy 2025 Match Referees

  • David Boon, Ranjan Madugalle, Andrew Pycroft

It’s a solid lineup with umpires who have officiated in major ICC finals, including the 2023 World Cup final in Ahmedabad.

What’s Next For Nitin Menon?

Menon may have skipped the Champions Trophy, but he’s still one of the best in the business. He has already officiated in big ICC events, including the T20 World Cup and ODI World Cup. With the T20 World Cup 2026 and World Test Championship Final coming up, he will be back soon.
