The  Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 is underway after a long wait and India made some bold calls. They handed debuts to Harshit Rana and Nitish Reddy. Also, the experienced duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin has missed out and India have gone with Washington Sundar as their lone-spinner.

India are batting first after winning the toss and it is quite rare that both Jadeja and Ashwin are not part of India's Test XI. It has happened only five times from December 2012 with this Perth Test being the fifth occassion. The last time it happened was also in Australia, during the 2020-21 BGT at the Gabba. In that game too, Washington Sundar played as a lone-spinner and performed quite well both with the bat and ball as India registered a historic win.

Washington Sundar Delivered All-Round Performance In Historic Gabba Win

Washington Sundar picked four wickets in that game, three in the first and one in the second outing. He also scored 62 in the first innings while in the run-chase, he scored crucial 22 runs under pressure to take India to a historic series win. At that time, both Ashwin and Jadeja were injured in that game and both of them also did not play the Perth Test in the 2018-19 BGT. One of the other two occasions is also in Australia while India went with all pace attack in the 2018 Johannesburg Test.

Both Jadeja and Ashwin have been the legends of the game and have won India many matches both with the bat and ball. However. Washington Sundar did brilliantly in the last series against the Kiwis with 16 wickets in two matches. So, India have gone with the in-form man and it would be interesting to see how he fills the big shoes of two legends in the Perth Test.
