The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is already facing a lot of backlash from fans over the sales of match tickets and the lack of basic cleanliness at stadiums.

On Thursday, the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 kicked off with England taking on New Zealand at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Crowd participation is a big concern in ODIs, and it became quite evident with empty stands during the first half of the tournament opener.

Around 40,000 women were handed out free tickets and food coupons for the England and New Zealand tie. Now, in a new twist, women who were handed tickets claim that they were told that India and Pakistan would be action and not the aforementioned teams.

As shown in a video from Asian News TV, the women further claimed that the local ruling political party distributed tickets and not the apex cricketing body.

However, the crowd did increase considerably during the evening and night, where official attendance reached around 47,518.

In the match, New Zealand thrashed defending champions England by nine wickets after Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra slammed respective hundreds, chasing 283. England managed 282 runs, with Joe Root and Jos Buttler contributing with the bat, scoring 77 and 43, respectively.

The Narendra Modi Stadium will next host the India vs Pakistan match on October 14.
