SMAT 2021: How Kerala lost the plot to get knocked out of the tournament

With 12 needed from the last over and a set Sachin Baby ( 66 off 34 balls), who alongside Salman Nazir scored 13 off Mohit Sharma in the last over, at the crease, facing a bowler (Arun Chaprana) who had already given 42 in his three overs in the game so far, and still the Kerala team is beaten by four runs in the match. Yes, it was that sort of a day at the office for Kerala, probably the most promising unit in the entire Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021. With this loss at the Wankhede, they were knocked out of the SMA Trophy 2021 as they ended with 12 points from five games, and Haryana, which beat Kerala and all the other teams in the Group-D qualified as the group topper. Kerala couldn’t even qualify as one of the two best second-placed teams in the elite groups because it lost to Andhra in its last encounter. Kerala, which chased a total of 196 and 212 against teams like Mumbai and Delhi failed to chase 199 against Haryana and could only make 112 against Andhra Pradesh, a side which was beaten easily by the likes of Delhi, Haryana, and even Pondicherry. The difference between the two big wins and the two losses was that in the two wins, the batsmen, who were settled, played throughout the innings to make sure that the team crossed the line. For example, Mohammed Azharuddeen banned throughout the game against Mumbai to get his team through while Uthappa got out on 95 against Delhi, only after making sure that Kerala wouldn’t lose from that situation. But in the game against Andhra, no batsman apart from Baby could connect the ball well and hence the scoreboard just ticked along, instead of racing away like it usually does in T20s. In this game against Haryana, skipper Samson and Baby did get starts, scoring a fifty each, but they just couldn't take their team across the line. And that was a big let down. In this game, chasing a total 198 set up by the Haryana team, even the opener Azharuddeen gotta start making 35 off just 25 balls, but couldn’t continue and repeat what he did against the Mumbai side For Haryana, Shivam Chauhan made 59 off 34 balls, before Rahul Tewatia finished it off in style by scoring 41 off 26 balls. Here is the Full Scorecard

CSK to part ways with Chawla, KKR has no intentions of releasing big players

The Indian Premier League season 14 is around the corner and only 24 hours are left for the deadline for the release of players. Quite a few big names have to part ways with their franchises. As per the contact of BCCI, none of the players can release themselves and has to keep playing for the franchise unless the franchise decides to part ways with the player. There are quite a few players in all the franchises who will be released and we can all speculate on the names until the franchises make a decision tomorrow. Three-time champions Chennai Super Kings is expected to part ways with Piyush Chawla who was bought at a whopping Rs 6.75 crores but failed to deliver in crunch moments. They are also expected to release Murali Vijay and find a replacement for Shane Watson who had announced his retirement after playing the last IPL. As far as Kedar Jadhav is concerned, his fate will be decided by the franchise after having a chat with skipper MS Dhoni. Even Suresh Raina’s fate rests on Dhoni. An IPL official denied the fact that CSK was contemplating releasing Raina and stated chances of retaining him is 50-50. As per reports in the Cricbuzz, Kings XI Punjab has no intentions of releasing Mayank Agarwal but they might part ways with Karun Nair, Sheldon Cottrell and Krishnappa Gowtham who garnered huge money in the last auction. Meanwhile, they are also in a dilemma over the fate of Glenn Maxwell. Mad Max had an ordinary IPL last season but what he did to the Indian bowlers in the limited-overs series has put the management in a precarious situation. As far as the Rajasthan Royals are concerned, they are planning to release Steve Smith who was retained for a whopping sum of Rs 12.5 crores. Leading the side, Smith didn’t really provide the much-needed balance to the team and his bat didn’t do the talking either. In all likelihood, Sanju Samson might be asked to lead the squad in the upcoming season. There were speculations that Andrew McDonald might have to part ways but the RR team management has clearly mentioned the head coach of RR will be on board. Its highly unlikely that the most successful team of the tournament, Mumbai Indians will retain Chris Lynn. If they do retain him, Lynn might consider himself very lucky especially given the fact that he didn’t play a single game for them last season. Meanwhile, the Royal Challengers Bangalore are pondering upon the fact whether to retain the likes of Shivam Dube, Chris Morris and Parthiv Patel. Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders are the franchises who is yet to give a clear indication on the players who could be released. The KKR team management has clearly stated that they have no intentions of releasing any big player. Reports in Cricbuzz claim that DC might decide to release Shimron Hetmyer.
