In a scene blending brilliance and banter, Virat Kohli was crowned India’s best fielder following his electric performance in the India vs New Zealand ICC Champions Trophy 2025 clash on March 2. Before presenting the award, the fielding coach T. Dilip was seen praising the boys and nominating other players for the award.

Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel were among the nominees for the medal who showed remarkable athleticism on the field with their spectacular saves, and 'superman'-like catches. However, there was more drama to the award presentation.

Best Fielding Nominations And Lost Medal Drama

The fielding coach T. Dilip didn't mince words while praising the fielding unit after the New Zealand match saying, "We always speak about being gun fielding unit and the different phases of the game with bullet throws coming really squeezed them, Well done."

He nominated Axar Patel first as one of the contenders of the medal.

"Coming to the contenders, from the third man it's never easy and he was just looking like a superman and got that direct hit, Axar Patel."

Then he moved on to nominate Virat Kohli while praising his immense presence on the field.

"Every game after game he showed it again today. The way he stamps his authority on the field, the way he moves to the prime positions taking those catches, Virat Kohli."

Shreyas Iyer was also nominated and when the medal was about to be presented, an unexpected turn halted the ceremony as the medal went momentarily missing, sparking a hilarious scramble in the dressing room.

As players and staff rummaged through kit bags and benches, captain Rohit Sharma theatrically exclaimed, “Oye, medal hi nahi mil raha!” (The medal’s gone missing!), setting the tone for a light-hearted frenzy. After a few minutes of search, the chaos ended when all-rounder Axar Patel, handed the medal.

India Marches To The Semi-Finals

Meanwhile, team India marches on to the semis after 3 straight wins in the group stage. In the clash against New Zealand, after being sent in to bat first, India faced an early setback at 30/3 as Matt Henry (5/42) tore through the top order, claiming the wickets of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and later Hardik Pandya.

However, Shreyas Iyer's resilient 79 off 98 balls and Axar Patel's 42 helped stabilize the innings, guiding India to a total of 249/9. In response, New Zealand's chase faltered against India's spin attack. Varun Chakaravarthy, making a surprise debut, delivered a historic performance with figures of 5/38, bowling out the Kiwis for 205.
