India captain Rohit Sharma recently shared a light-hearted moment during a press conference when a reporter mistakenly suggested that veteran batters Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane had retired from international cricket. This confusion happened after India’s tense draw in the Gabba Test against Australia, which kept the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series tied at 1-1.

It all began when Rohit Sharma talked about Ravichandran Ashwin's shocking retirement decision after the Gabba Test. During the conversation, a reporter asked about the future of Pujara and Rahane, mentioning their long careers. Rohit’s reply, which hinted at their retirement, caused some confusion. Realising the mix-up, he quickly clarified the situation with humour.

"When you play som much cricket together, and then you see these boys leaving one by one, it does stir up some feeling obviously. But we cannot do anything. We are still friends and will always be freinds although they do not go to tours about us. Rahane is in Mumbai so we meet quite often. Pujara is always hiding in Rajkot but we still manage to catch up," Rohit said.

"They have scored so many runs, helped India win so many matches so obviously they will be missed. By the way, Rahane has not announced retirement yet, you guys will get me into trouble. Pujara has not announced his retirement either, they are just not here right now. They are always welcome, and the doors are always open for them. You almost got me into trouble," he added.

Pujara and Rahane's Contributions To India

This fun exchange lightened the mood after a tense match and gave the room a good laugh. Despite recent struggles in their international form, both Pujara and Rahane remain important figures in Indian cricket. Together, they’ve played 188 Tests, scoring over 12,000 runs and forming the core of India's middle order for over a decade.

However, both players have faced challenges in recent years. Their performances have declined since India’s historic win in Australia in 2021. Pujara’s form has dipped, scoring only 1084 runs in 22 Tests since at an average of 29.29. Rahane has also struggled, managing just 606 runs in 16 Tests at an average of 22.44. While their international careers may be uncertain, both players’ contributions remain unforgettable in Indian cricket history.
