Warwickshire Cricket to deploy undercover officials following the racial abuse during the fifth ENG vs IND Test

Warwickshire Cricket came up with a series of initiatives to tackle the instances of racial abuse that affected the delayed fifth Test between India and England. As a result, the second T20I between England and India at Edgbaston will be monitored by 'undercover football crowd-style spotters'.

Warwickshire confirmed that undercover football crowd-style spotters would be stationed throughout the Edgbaston stadium to listen out for abusive behaviour and report it immediately during Saturday's T20. They also said that the police presence at games would be increased considerably to handle such incidents and enable more chances of successful prosecutions.

"Nearly 100,000 people watched one of the most exciting Test matches in recent history earlier this week," Stuart Cain, Warwickshire's chief executive, said. However, a series of racial insults were reported from one of the sections in the crowd. "But we cannot hide from the mindless racist abuse experienced by some fans following India in the Eric Hollies Stand,”

"These unacceptable actions by a small number of people have overshadowed a superb sporting contest, and those responsible do not deserve to be part of the cricket family. We need to work harder as people, as well as a venue, to take responsibility for ensuring that everyone feels safe and welcome when watching the game,"

Edgbaston's security partner, G4S, is investigating why Monday's incidents were not more swiftly resolved. The club said that all fans at subsequent matches would be encouraged to report abuse discreetly via the Edgbaston app, adding that anyone found guilty of a hate crime will be banned not only from Edgbaston but from all venues under the ECB's jurisdiction.

"I was angry that a minority of people thought it acceptable to racially abuse a group of fans who were following India and bringing great entertainment to the Hollies," Stuart Cain, CEO of Warwickshire Cricket, said.

"This has given the club renewed energy and motivation to work even harder to make sure Edgbaston is a place for everyone - regardless of race, sex, gender, ability or background. A few mindless idiots must not distract us. We are determined that any unacceptable behaviour will have a very public consequence,"

"Meanwhile, I want to apologise directly to any fans who were subjected to racist abuse. Everyone at Edgbaston will work hard to do better, and they are welcome back with open arms in the future," he concluded.

England won the fifth Test and squared the series in thrilling style, chasing down 378 before lunch on the final day, of which 259 were scored on the fourth afternoon and evening. England's victory denied India a chance of a historic series win on English soil.

ENG vs IND | 1st T20I | India hand England a 50-run thumping as Hardik Pandya steals the show

The Indian team proved too good for England in the first fixture of the ongoing three-match T20I series on July 7 (Thursday) at Southampton. India won the toss on a relatively flat surface and opted to bat first. Captain Rohit Sharma was flawless with his lofted shots, providing a solid start to the Indian team. Soon, Moeen Ali was brought into the attack, who dismissed Sharma (24) and Ishan Kishan (8) in quick successions. Then, Deepak Hooda continued with the momentum and played an attacking inning of 33 from 17 deliveries. Afterwards, Suryakumar Yadav contributed with a quickfire knock of 39 off 19, looking confident as ever with his trademark shots. Hardik Pandya was impressive yet again with the bat as he brought up his maiden T20I fifty, smashing 51 off 33, laced with six fours and a solitary maximum. Axar Patel (17) and Dinesh Karthik (11) contributed in the latter part of the innings to help India post 198 on the board. Looking at the English batting line-up, it seemed like a par total initially. As it turned out, it proved to be more than sufficient. With the new ball, Bhuvneshwar Kumar breached the defences of an in-form Jos Buttler (0) through a perfect in-swinger. In the fifth over, Pandya took the crucial wickets of Dawid Malan (21) and Liam Livingstone (0). In his second over, the Pandya ended Jason Roy's struggle, sending him back to the dressing room for 4 off 16. With the scoreboard reading 33/4, Harry Brook and Ali chipped in with a handy partnership, providing some hope for the Englishmen. Continuing with the trend of the evening, Moeen was dropped on 18 by Suryakumar Yadav in the 11th over. However, in the next over the all-rounder slammed a four and a six off Patel and threatened the 'Men in Blue' to make full use of the dropped opportunity. However, Yuzvendra Chahal broke the partnership by getting Brook (28) holed out to Yadav in the deep mid-wicket. A few balls later, Ali was stumped as well, which left England reeling at 100/6. https://twitter.com/BCCI/status/1545147694968184832?s=20&t=qgKhXAvYpYLkZ4Xv46QOqw Further, only Chris Jordan (26*) was a notable contributor to lessen the losing deficit, and the Indian team registered a big win by 50 runs and lead the series 1-0. For his brilliant all-round performance, Hardik Pandya was named as the 'Player of the Match'. Both teams will feature in the second T20I, slated to be played on July 9 at Birmingham. Brief Scores: India- 198/8 (20) Hardik Pandya 51 (33), Suryakumar Yadav 39 (19); Chris Jordan 2/23, Moeen Ali 2/26 England- 148/10 (19.3) Moeen Ali 36 (20), Harry Brook 28 (23) Hardik Pandya 4/33, Yuzvendra Chahal 2/32 Result: India won by 50 runs
